They got one Friday night under the lights.
One night. The Mustangs got to experience a home game under the lights. But those lights weren't theirs. They had to rent them.
For so many high school football teams, Friday Night Lights is a tradition. For Sussex County Technical School, it is a dream they are still working to make permanent. When that special game ended, the rented lights went away.
The program has been making do with a dirt practice field, aging goalposts, a struggling scoreboard, and limited weight-room and locker-room facilities, according to the team's community advocates. The players keep working with what they have.
The scoreboard doesn't tell their story.
Game after game, this team has faced losses. But the boys keep coming back. They practice, work hard, encourage one another, and fight until the final whistle.
“But aren't they 0–6?”
Yes. And they still show up. They keep practicing, fighting for every yard, and cheering for one another. The scoreboard tells you how a season is going. It doesn't tell you what these kids deserve.
Better facilities aren't a reward reserved for winning teams. They're an opportunity to train, grow, and belong — for every Mustang who comes next, too.
Even at JV games, varsity players stand on the sidelines cheering for the younger Mustangs, calling out encouragement, and celebrating their efforts. They don't stop being a team when a game goes badly. They don't stop being family when they lose.
At the end of every huddle, they shout: MUSTANGS. FAMILY.
Reliable. Resilient. Relentless.
Those are the words Mustangs Board Member & Parent Kristy Pinand used to describe this program. Reliable: they show up for one another. Resilient: they keep moving forward despite setbacks. Relentless: win or lose, they never stop trying.
This is bigger than a field.
One Mustang reportedly lost years of playing football because budget cuts meant the after-school transportation he needed wasn't available. That's a reminder that athletics aren't only about facilities or final scores. They're about access, belonging, opportunity, and the chance to be part of something bigger.
We want a better future for the players here today and for every Mustang who follows. A stronger home for a program that already has heart.
